Chrystia Freeland is a Canadian journalist, author, and politician who currently serves as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance for Canada. Born on August 2, 1968, in Peace River, Alberta, she is the youngest of three daughters to Donald Freeland and Halyna Chomiak. Her parents were both successful in their respective fields – her father as a lawyer and her mother as a writer – and instilled in Chrystia a passion for learning and intellectual curiosity from a young age.
Freeland attended high school in Edmonton and then went on to study at Harvard University, where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in History and Literature. She continued her education at St. Antony’s College, Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar, where she earned a Master’s degree in Slavonic and East European Studies. After her studies, Freeland embarked on a successful career in journalism, working for publications such as The Financial Times, The Globe and Mail, and Reuters. She gained recognition for her coverage of global economic issues, particularly in Eastern Europe and Russia.
However, in 2013, Freeland made the transition from journalism to politics when she ran for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons as a member of the Liberal Party. She was elected as the Member of Parliament for the riding of Toronto Centre and was quickly appointed as the Minister of
